Environment – Alternate Mode of Transport:
Initiative for introducing AFTO train was well coordinate activity between SIAM, Leading Car
Manufacturers along with Indian Railways, with Maruti driving it from front.
While in India only 6% of Finished Vehicles are shipped by train, Maruti accounts for 12%.
Maruti uses train for all bulk movement and effectively for their Hub and Spoke locations
which was illustrated in my earlier chapter Strategy and Design with Customer Focus.
Starting with single deck Train (NMG) now Maruti uses 27 rakes which can accommodate
upto 318 cars. Maruti uses 5 loading terminals 4 in North (Gurugram, Farukhnagar, Kathuwas
& Patli) and 1 in West (Detroj). Deliveries happens to 13 terminals pan india Bengalur,
Nagpur, Mumbai, Guwahati, Mundra Port, Indore, Kolkatta, Chennai, Hyderabad,
Ahmedabad, NCR, Siliguri and Agartala.
As the train travels at a high speed of close to 95Kms many far off locations especially in
North east the lead time has been reduced by almost 50%.
Above all using railways Maruti has offset nearly 3,000 MT of carbon dioxide emissions. In
addition, over 100 million litres of fossil fuel was saved, as the company could avoid over 1
lakh truck trips on the national highways.
Use of train has direct link to volumes and also supports Hub & Spoke Operations
