Inland Waterways – Declared by Government as National Waterways :

    Concerns for Automotive Logistics:

    • None of the OEM factories are located anywhere close to the starting point from where

         the routes operate.
    • Chennai may be en-route for Route No.4, but the concern of first mile will always arise

    • The first mile and last mile remains a concerned in the entire stretch

    • Turnaround time for delivery increases

    • Involves multiple handling
    • Multiple establishment costs for OEM’s

    • Inadequate Safety and Security concerns are felt in these locations

    • When we move finished vehicles through waterways the same is done by Barges, which
can be a cause of concern on Safety and quality

One of the leading North based OEM’s explored the possibility of using the National

waterways No.1 for shipment to Kolkatta. Fundamentally two issues majorly impacted their
    operations:

    • Transit time for delivery

    • Multiple handling and damges
    So the project was dropped
