Environment - Emission Norms:
World over the primary sources of greenhouse gas emissions are electricity and heat
(31%), agriculture (11%), transportation (15%), forestry (6%) and manufacturing (12%).
Energy production of all types accounts for 72 percent of all emissions.
After energy Livestock contributes to 18 per cent of the greenhouse gases that cause
global warming, which is more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put
together.
India is one of largest emitter of greenhouse gases (GHGs), just behind China and the US. Coal
based power plants, rice paddies and cattle are major sources of emissions, which continue to rise
steeply, although per-capita emissions remain well below the global average India emitted about it
about 2.5 billion metric tons of CO2 annually.
In line world Energy Sector contributes 68.7% percent of GHG emissions, followed by
agriculture, industrial processes, land-use change, forestry and waste which contribute
19.6 percent, 6.0 percent, 3.8 and 1.9 percent relatively to GHG emissions.
Maintaining basic Emission Standards are the legal requirements governing air pollutants released
into the atmosphere. Emission standards set quantitative limits on the permissible amount of
specific air pollutants that may be released from specific sources over specific timeframes.
