Environment :
Capital city of Delhi NCR became the Pollution Capital of India in 90’s. This happened due to
various reasons.
• Employment opportunity increased in It and Auto Sector. Which created an inflow of people
from all the neighboring state looking for employment.
• Increase in Population required improvement in infrastructure whether road or houses
• Poor Public Transportation and distances in the city, increase in Personal vehicle. Delhi NCR
became the largest market for Cars and two wheelers
• Weather condition was severe (Summer or Winter), making difficult for people to travel.
• Construction work increased to improve the infrastructure which also polluted the city heavily
Major Actions initiated were:
• All public transportation (Taxi, Car and Buses) were converted into CNG
• Mandatory Pollution Certificate in all vehicles which were subject to regular checking by
authorities
• Government banned entry of Goods Carrier inside the Delhi city. Many companies having
warehouse operations in Delhi either closed or shifted to border areas to avoid logistics related
problems
• Government levied penalties against violation
• Last set of tax levied by Delhi Government was applying Green Tax on all commercial vehicles
• New New Expressways (Western and Eastern Peripheral) has helped decongest commercial
vehicle movement in Delhi
With Good Infrastructure, Governance and Discipline needed to control Environment Pollution
