Environment – Alternate Mode of Transport
Movement of Finished Vehicles through train for two wheelers and four wheelers started way
back in early 2000’s.
Wagons used for shipment through train was NMG and BCCN.
NMG wagons were basically converted from Previously used Passenger Trains. These were
very old with modifications with single deck only.
BCCN had similar issues but, was difficult from loading point of view.
Indian Railway along with Industry Body consisting of SIAM, MSIL and APL Vascor introduced
the new AFTO Policy. The wagons were also designed under the supervision of DRDO.
The new design was manufactured by Titagarh Industries (MSIL) and Texmaco (APL).
Set of 3 rakes was launched and started operations by Maruti in the first quarter of 2014
This was followed by 3 rakes by APL which started operations during September 2014
Initial norms introduced by Indian Railways was regarding No. of Rakes and License Fees were
relaxed during the year 2018.
Subsequent to the changes many leading Auto Logistics Company applied for license for
operating rakes. New manufacturers like Jindal etc. who were manufacturing normal wagons
offered to produce Auto Rakes for movement of Vehicles.
AFTO Train Modal is sustainable and is picking up on volumes well
